The Case of Sugarcane Growers in Pakistan NIBAF – CS 03 - 2 2
In the early 2000s, a dynamic commercial bank (FBL) teamed up with
a renowned industrial house (JDW group) of the country that translated into
sugarcane value chain financing (SVCF). To secure sugarcane for their processing
plants, JDW was searching financing avenues. At the same time, a mid-sized
commercial bank eager to initiate financing of innovative products matches with
JDW interest. The case examines, how the hookup changed Agri. landscape and
socioeconomic uplift of farmer community in Sadiqabad-Rahim Yar Khan belt of southern Punjab.
Historically, the district Rahim Yar Khan was famous for its cotton cultivation, but for last few years’ cotton
had turned into loss reaping crop. It further pushed farmer’s community towards deepened poverty. Resultantly,
majority farmers were under stress and indebted.
