For me, effective trainers begin with the 'end in mind', i.e. with the outcome or end result of the session or
training. They spend time clarifying the training outcome with those requesting the capacity building, so that
the training objectives can be written in terms of: By the end of the session/training, participants will be able
          to …..

Trainers who are clear about what the outcome they must achieve generally stay on the path! They remain
focused, relevant, and manage participants and the given time more effectively. Every training group brings
a new batch of participants, different in terms of expertise, experiences and personality types. An effective
training is not about what the trainer says or does, but about how people were made to think and feel. This
requires the trainers to have the patience and skills to deal with different people, have the patience and
abilities to allow everyone to participate effectively and contribute. Effective trainers use a variety of tools
to command attention, and exude a purposeful and confident presence. They have the skills to observe,
question and through well-selected words, stories, quotes and examples create and manage appropriate
'moods' within the training room. And finally, I believe that effective trainers genuinely care about the
people they train. Through their facilitation they aim to 'make a difference'.

                                                                                                          ??
What training methods do you use, and which have proven the most effective in your experience?
While I also conduct training where the trainer comes with pre-structured messages, the training that I enjoy
designing and conducting are the more unstructured, highly participative and experiential training, i.e.
capacity building situations where the participants are put in the driving seat most of the time. In such
workshops, my role is that of a facilitator, mentor and guide, rather than a technical resource.

                                                                                         ??
How do you keep current with the latest developments and ideas about training?

I recently invested in 'going back to school' I secured a Master's degree in Public Administration from the
Harvard Kennedy School of Government. I also worked towards a certificate in Leadership, Management
and Decision Making, and another certificate from the prestigious Edward S. Mason Program. I truly believe
that learning is a lifelong process, and one must remain connected to centers of learning across the world. It
is clear that technology will change the pace and way in which capacity building will happen in future.
Given the availability of content on the internet, organizations will demand trainers who are skilled at
instructional design and how to facilitate effective training. Technology will make it possible to take training
to people's desktops and laptops. I do believe that the role of a trainer will change –where the trainer will
play a more significant role in designing training and creatively mentoring participants.
